How to Make Age Old Compost Tea

Age Old Teaches You How To Make Your Very Own Compost Tea at Home.

Liquid fertilizer is an age old way of adding nutrients to the soil. Earliest records of liquid fertilizer can be traced back to the history of Ancient Athens when they carried city sewage by way of canals to feed their crops.

Over time, fertilizers have evolved thanks to advances in science and agriculture.  Now more than ever, soil cultivars are taking measures to look at soil as a resource that needs long term management and care. As plants are grown and taken from the soil, nutrients must be replenished back in. It’s a simple idea really. It’s the circle of life.

In more recent history, with the boom of the industrial revolution and the discovery of nitrates for the use of weaponry, nitrates have been exploited.   Modern (and unsustainable) commercial farming and monoculture would not have existed without using nitrates in place of soil fertility. While this was an efficient way of giving crops the added nitrogen for growth and performance, this has caused the decline of soil fertility on a massive scale. Age Old was established to counteract this effect.

In this post we will look at one simple way you can take control of the health of your plants and soil in a sustainable way. Our recipe for compost tea made from Age Old Earthworm Castings can be added to your soil to help create an environment that can accommodate the presence of beneficial fungi and bacteria, allowing them to grow and reproduce. Repeated applications revitalizes the soil and allow the cultivation of plants without the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

How to make your own

To make your own compost tea, you will need a 5 gallon bucket, a fish tank aeration pump, and a nylon sock. As a food source, use Age Old Humic, Age Old Earthworm Castings, Age Old Optimize, and cane sugar.

Fill the bucket with water. Set up aeration pump and run the pump for at least one hour to remove the chlorine from the water.

Add to the water: two tablespoons of sugar, two ounces of Age Old Liquid Kelp, two ounces of Age Old Humic, and one ounce of Age Old Optimize.

Place one pound of earthworm castings into sock and suspend the casting into the bucket with twine for at least 24 hours, but no more than 48 hours.

During the entire brewing process and storage period continue pumping air into the solution. This will keep the microorganisms in the tea active and alive. Use the brew within 24 hours after brewing process is complete. If you want the compost tea to last longer, you can use the aeration pump and it can last up to 10-14 days. You will know if your tea has gone bad by the smell. Trust.
